3 Lesser-Known Facts About Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are one of the most popular roofing materials in the country. It’s estimated that they make up 80% of all residential roofs in North America.

Thompson Roofing and Construction, your trusted roofing contractor, lists other lesser-known facts about asphalt shingles below:

  1. Laminated Shingles Are the Most Popular Shingle Style

Thanks to the depth and texture they add to your exterior, laminate or architectural shingles are the most popular shingle style. And since they have a heavier base mat than three-tab shingles, they can withstand strong winds and harsher weather conditions, making them a great choice for homes in areas that often experience extreme weather events.

  1. Twenty Percent of Asphalt Shingles’ Weight Should Be From Asphalt

Quality shingles need to contain a minimum amount of asphalt to make sure they’re durable enough to handle the elements. Industry standards set that amount at 20%. (To put this into context, asphalt road pavement is only made of 6% asphalt).

  1. Manufacturers Embedded Up to 40% More Granules in Their Shingles

You shouldn’t worry too much about minor granule loss. That’s because manufacturers embedded up to 40% more UV-resistant granules into the top layer of shingles. As such, minor granule loss shouldn’t affect your roof’s protection against UV rays.

When should you be worried about granule loss? When shingle sediment starts accumulating in your gutters or bald patches start appearing on your roof. These warning signs are usually caused by weakening granule adhesion, which is a natural consequence of aging. As your roof ages, granule adhesion to its top layer weakens. Without these granules, it’s only a matter of time until cracks start to form on your shingle roof. That’s why if you see any of the said warning signs, you should start planning a roofing replacement.
