Why You Should Choose a BBB-Rated Contractor

The Better Business Bureau, or simply BBB, is the most recognized and trusted name that customers turn to when looking for trustworthy businesses. We at Thompson Roofing and Construction are proud to have maintained a consistent A+ rating with the BBB. In this blog, we share an overview of this rating and how it helps improve our roofing and siding services.

Better Business Bureau Ratings

BBB ratings represent how they view a business interacts with its customers. Businesses are rated with A+ as the highest and F as the lowest. Sometimes, a business may receive NR (“No Rating”) if the BBB has insufficient information about the business or if it’s undergoing a review. Customer reviews are not factored into BBB ratings, but have a separate star-based ratings system. BBB ratings are based on seven elements:

  1. Complaint History With the BBB — The BBB takes into account the number of complaints filed against the business in question as well as how they respond to these complaints. A business who makes the effort to resolve such complaints gives a clearer picture of how sincere a company is at making their customers happy. If a complaint is resolved, the BBB also considers the time it took to resolve the problems.

  2. Type of Business — The rating is negatively affected if it is the type of business that raises marketplace concerns or if it’s believed to be operating in violation of the law.

  3. Time in Business — The BBB takes into account how long the company has been in business, regardless of changes in ownership and/or management.

  4. Transparent Business Practices — Companies gain a higher rating if they practice transparency in their marketplace conduct. This includes providing a detailed list of services on the website, clear and understandable language on the contracts, and being upfront with remodeling costs.

  5. Honoring Commitments to the BBB — The business must honor commitments, such as abiding by a mediation settlement or arbitration award.

  6. Licensing and Government Actions Known to BBB — A business must have correct licenses and have completed all required assessments. A rating may be lowered if there are known government actions against the business.

  7. Advertising Issues Known to BBB — The BBB rating can be lowered if the business misuses BBB trademarks, has questionable marketing practices or have customer complaints against the business’s advertisements.
